Weekly Influence

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Hello everyone!

I’ve started writing a column over at Ten Ton Studios called “Weekly Influence.” As the title title implies, new entries arrive weekly. The “Influence” is musings on artists that have had an effect on the way that I work as an illustrator. Most of the time, the columns will concern artists I have been a fan of for several years. With less frequency, as is the first column, the subject was someone I’ve only recently discovered but whom I am studying in order to improve. Some of the people I write about everyone will know while others will more obscure.

I’m doing this exercise for multiple reasons. One hope is that I can introduce people to new artists that they’ve never seen before. Illustrators throughout time, in many disciplines, are constantly solving the problem of telling stories on the page. Perhaps by studying the ways others (comic and non-comic related image makers alike) look at similar issues, we can learn from them. Secondly, maybe talking about why these artists originally influenced me will help solidify my own thoughts and processes allowing me to grow a bit more.

Every week the column is posted on Sunday to the main page at tentonstudios.com and continues in the forum. I’ve already written the first three entries so wander over and find out who I chose. Then join our forums and discuss their influence on our industry! Exploring and discussing things can only lead to growth for all involved.
